Most Google Ads waste hides in plain sight: keywords that spend but never convert, search terms you never meant to bid on, and ads that quietly underperform. Keyword Ninja surfaces all of it. This guide walks through the fastest path to a leaner account — starting with tools that are free on every plan.
You don’t need a big budget or a PRO plan to start. The Wasted Spend scan below is available to everyone.
Start with the Wasted Spend scan (free)
Open Suggestions → Wasted Spend (/dashboard/wasted-spend). It analyzes your enabled keywords, ads, and search terms over the last 30 days (you can change the window) and groups the leaks into clear categories with an estimated saving for each:
| Category | What it flags | Default rule |
|---|---|---|
| Zero-conversion keywords | Keywords spending with no conversions | 30+ clicks, 0 conversions, ≥ $25 spent |
| Search-term mining | Search terms worth blocking as negatives | 5+ recorded days, 0 conversions, ≥ $10 spent |
| Underperforming ads | Ads dragging down an ad group | 500+ impressions and CTR below half the ad group average |
| Duplicate-intent keywords | The same term competing against itself in multiple ad groups | Cannibalization within a campaign |
The page sorts everything by cost, so the biggest leaks are at the top. For any flagged search term you can click Add Negative right from the list — Keyword Ninja adds it as a negative on the highest-cost ad group and marks the term excluded.
The total at the top is a conservative estimate (underperforming ads count only half their cost, and duplicate-intent items aren’t added to the total at all), so real savings are usually higher.
Block the search terms you never wanted
Wasted spend almost always starts with irrelevant search terms. Review them under Search Terms (/dashboard/search_terms), or use the faster card-based flow at Search Terms Ninja (/dashboard/search-terms-ninja).
For each term you can:
- Add it as a negative at the campaign or ad-group level (default match type is Exact), or
- Add it as a positive keyword if it’s actually a good query you should be bidding on directly.
Your changes are staged into a queue and applied to Google Ads in one batch, so you can review a whole session’s worth of decisions before anything goes live. Existing negatives are managed under Negative Keywords (/dashboard/negative).
Fix conflicts that block your good keywords
A negative keyword that accidentally blocks one of your active keywords is pure lost opportunity. Open Suggestions → Conflicts (/dashboard/conflicts) to find every case where a campaign- or ad-group-level negative is blocking an enabled keyword. Resolve or hide each one so your best keywords can actually serve.
Cut cannibalization with N-gram Analysis
When several keywords or search terms share the same words, they compete against each other and inflate your CPCs. Suggestions → N-gram Analysis (/dashboard/ngram-analysis) breaks your terms down into the words and phrases that actually drive spend, so you can spot the expensive, low-value patterns to negative out or consolidate.
Automate the cleanup (PRO and Enterprise)
Once you trust the manual workflow, let rules do it on a schedule. Open Automations (/dashboard/automations) — a PRO or Enterprise feature — and create rules from the built-in templates:
- Pause keyword — pauses keywords that spend without converting (default: cost ≥ $50 and 0 conversions).
- Add negative keyword — blocks high-click, zero-conversion search terms (default: 20+ clicks, 0 conversions).
- Add keyword — promotes converting search terms into keywords.
New to automations? Use Preview to see exactly which keywords or terms a rule would touch before it runs, and keep riskier rules in dry-run mode until you’re confident.
Let AI prioritize the next move (PRO and Enterprise)
Suggestions → AI Insights (/dashboard/insights) reviews your account and returns prioritized, one-click recommendations — pause this keyword, add that negative, promote this search term — each with the reasoning and estimated impact. It’s the fastest way to know what to fix next without digging through tables. (PRO/Enterprise; look for the Upgrade prompt if you’re on a lower plan.)
Stop paying for fraudulent clicks
If competitors or bots are repeatedly clicking your ads, you’re paying for traffic that will never convert. Ninja Shield (/dashboard/shield) detects repeat clickers and excludes their IPs from your campaigns so your budget goes to real prospects.
Watch for sudden cost spikes
Keyword Ninja runs a daily anomaly check and sends a notification when a campaign’s cost spikes, its CTR drops, or conversions crash. Keep an eye on the bell icon in the top bar so a runaway campaign doesn’t quietly burn through budget overnight.
A simple weekly routine
- Open Wasted Spend and clear the top items by cost.
- Skim new Search Terms and add obvious negatives.
- Check Conflicts so nothing is blocking your good keywords.
- Glance at Notifications for any cost or conversion anomalies.
- On PRO/Enterprise, let your Automations handle the repetitive cleanup between reviews.
Fifteen minutes a week on this loop is usually enough to keep an account lean — and every negative you add keeps saving money long after you’ve added it.
