5 signs you're wasting Google Ads budget (and how to fix each)

Most accounts quietly leak 10–30% of budget on clicks that were never going to convert. Here are five tell-tale signs — and the exact fix for each.

Almost every Google Ads account we scan is leaking budget somewhere — usually 10–30% of spend on clicks that were never going to convert. The good news: the leaks are predictable, and most take minutes to fix. Here are the five we see most often.

1. Keywords with clicks but zero conversions

The classic. A keyword has racked up dozens of clicks and real spend, but not a single conversion. Keep paying and it just keeps draining the budget.

The fix: find keywords with meaningful traffic — say 30+ clicks — and zero conversions, then pause the persistent offenders or tighten their match type. Keyword Ninja’s Wasted Spend report surfaces these automatically and attaches an estimated monthly saving.

2. Search terms you’d never bid on

Broad and phrase match invite the long tail — and a lot of it is junk: “free”, “jobs”, “diy”, competitor names, the wrong intent entirely. Every irrelevant click is budget you’ll never get back.

The fix: review your actual search terms and add the bad ones as negative keywords so they can’t trigger your ads again. Add them at the ad-group or campaign level depending on how broadly the term applies.

3. One ad quietly dragging a group down

When an ad group runs several ads, the laggard can soak up impressions at half the click-through rate of its siblings — spending money to underperform.

The fix: compare each ad’s CTR against its ad-group average and pause the ones running well below it. Funnel those impressions to the creatives that actually earn the click.

4. Keywords cannibalizing each other

The same term living in multiple ad groups — or fighting a negative you forgot about — means your own keywords compete with each other, inflate CPCs and muddy your data.

The fix: find duplicate-intent keywords across a campaign and consolidate them, and check the Conflicts view for negatives that are silently blocking live keywords.

5. Bots and repeat clickers

Not every click is a human. Competitors, bots and the occasional frustrated repeat-clicker can quietly burn through a daily budget — especially on high-CPC terms.

The fix: watch click patterns by IP and exclude the obvious offenders at the campaign level. Keyword Ninja’s Ninja Shield automates exactly this.
