Performance Max

Keeping brand traffic out of PMax - what is actually working for people?

Our PMax campaign is eating brand searches and reporting them as its own success. Cost per conversion looks fantastic, which is exactly what you would expect when a campaign takes credit for people who were already coming. Brand exclusions are on. They help and they are not airtight - variants and misspellings still get through, and anything that's not literally the brand name but is obviously navigational does too. What I want to know is whether people are solving this with exclusions, with a separate brand search campaign that outranks it, or by accepting the blend and only ever looking at non-brand performance separately. Every option has an argument and I would rather hear what people are living with than what the theory says.

We run the separate brand campaign and treat it as the price of getting a clean read on everything else (it also gives you the ability to actually control brand messaging, which is worth something on its own). The thing I would push back on is "accept the blend". You can accept it operationally, but if the blended number ever goes into a report that someone uses to decide budget, you have baked an unfalsifiable claim into the account. Nobody can later prove what PMax contributed, because brand is doing the heavy lifting inside the same number.

Exclusions plus a brand campaign, and check the exclusions quarterly because the variants change... people misspell your brand in new and creative ways every year, and the list you wrote at launch will be out of date by spring. The other thing nobody does: look at your brand search volume before and after PMax launched. If total brand searches didn't rise, PMax didn't create that demand, it harvested it. That's the whole argument in one chart and it ends the conversation.
