Fair question, and the answer is that it is a rolling window rather than a running total. The wasted spend figure covers the last 30 days by default. Every day, one day drops off the back and a new one joins the front. So the number moves on its own constantly, and a fall can mean either that things improved or simply that an expensive day has aged out of the window. That is the right behaviour for the question it answers - "what's being wasted right now" - and it is the wrong number to track as a score, because you can't tell improvement from the calendar. If you want to see whether your work is paying off, change the range to a fixed period and compare like for like: this January against last January, rather than today's rolling 30 against last month's rolling 30. Also worth knowing: a keyword drops off this list the moment it stops meeting the criteria, including because its spend fell out of the window. It hasn't necessarily been fixed.

This trips up clients more than practitioners, in my experience. If you put a rolling number in a monthly report it will look like performance even when nothing happened, and eventually it will look like failure for the same reason. Fixed periods in reports, rolling windows for working. Never the other way round.
